Here are some facts about Juneteenth:
- Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
- Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States.
- Emancipation Day and Freedom Day are also names for Juneteenth.
- Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when a Union Army general arrived in Galveston, Texas and demanded the state’s enslaved people be set free. It was the last state in the country to do so.
- It is the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the US.
- Texas was the first state to declare Juneteenth a state holiday.
- June 19 isn’t the only anniversary of events that contributed to ending slavery in the U.S.
How you can celebrate Juneteenth:
- Visit a museum– Explore a museum close to you to learn more about the holiday. If you can’t go to in person museum, you can find exhibits online.
- Attend a local celebration– Attending a local Juneteenth event is a great opportunity to learn more about history. It’s also a great way to get to know the people of your community. But you can also visit your county or city website to see what they have planned.
- Create kid-friendly crafts– Flex your family art skills by creating your own version of the Juneteenth flag. Creating crafts is a way to get your children involved in the holiday.
- Plan a cookout– Food is an important part of the Juneteenth celebration. Have your family and friends come over for your typical summer barbecue.
