Ways to stay healthy during the holiday season

Happy holidays from ClaimLinx!

The holiday season is a time for parties, shopping, reconnecting with loved ones, and …

Unfortunately, it’s also cold and flu season. Don’t let sickness get your family down. Follow the tips below to help you and your family stay healthy during the winter and holidays.

Tips to Stay Healthy:

  1. Drink plenty of water– It is important to stay hydrated during the colder months. Drinking enough water every day can boost your immune system and help you fight off viruses.
  2. Prevent the spread of germs– Remember to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.  Wash your hands regularly with warm water for 20 seconds. If you can’t wash your hands, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  3. Manage stress– The holiday season can be stressful for many reasons. If you see yourself getting stressed out, there are ways to manage your stress. You can manage stress by seeking support from loved ones, staying active, and getting enough rest.
  4. Getting enough sleep– Getting enough sleep during the holiday season is important. If you do not get enough sleep, it can affect your immune system. Getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night will let your body recover and protect you from getting sick.
  5. Increase Vitamin D– If you have low levels of vitamin D, it can affect your immune system and it is easier for you to get sick. To boost your intake, you can take a vitamin D supplement. Or you can eat foods that are rich in Vitamin D. Salmon, eggs, red meat, and milk are good sources of Vitamin D.
  6. Make time for exercise– Even though the days are getting shorter and colder, it is still important to make time for exercise. Daily exercise is crucial for good health.

Foods to eat during the winter:

  1. Rooted vegetables- Beets, carrots, and turnips are plentiful during the winter months. And – bonus – they’re packed with essential nutrients, including beta-carotene, and vitamins C and A. Eating these vegetables can boost your immune system so it can protect you from the cold or flu.
  2. Citrus fruit– Citrus fruits are packed with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is important, because it can boost your mood and immune system. Some examples are oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and mangos.
  3. Beans– Beans are filled with protein and contain all the essential amino acids.
  4. Nuts– Most nuts are high in antioxidants and trace minerals. You must try to buy raw, unsalted, or low-salt options instead of nuts that are candied, salted, or included in trail mix.
  5. Soup– The fall and winter seasons are the perfect time for soup. But your soup recipe should avoid a large amount of sodium. The recipe should include water as the base and a lot of vegetables.
  6. Whole Grains– Quinoa and other whole grains like oatmeal, farro, bulgur, and buckwheat provide protein and fiber. Whole-grain bread is also a good source of protein and fiber.
